Case Study: Catch22’s Frontline Work Against Child Exploitation

Catch22 – a leading national charity dedicated to building a better society by empowering individuals to overcome challenging circumstances – welcomes three new, high impact services into our community. The onboarding of these new services marks a significant step in their bid to combat child exploitation and support the most vulnerable people across the UK.
We recently caught up with Gemma Mander (Staffordshire Navigator Service), Nadia Ayub (West Mercia Steps service), Jamie Linney (Music to My Ears) and Jack Goldman (Data and Performance Lead) who kindly shared their insights into the innovative work their services do, their goals and aspirations for the year ahead and the benefits of integrated working.

West Mercia Steps Service

West Mercia is the fourth largest policing area in England and Wales, covering approx. 3,000 square miles within the West Midlands region. Catch22’s West Mercia Steps service works with CYPs up to the age of 18. Support is focused on early intervention and aims to get young people into positive diversionary activities to prevent them becoming exploited. Practitioners offer a range of interventions including:

    • Targeted group work in schools
    • Parental workshops
    • One-to-one sessions

Stoke and Staffs Navigator Service

The Stoke and Staffordshire Navigator and Tailored Support Service supports children and young people impacted by violent crime. Navigators engage the young person at ‘reachable moments’ – this could be when a young person is arrested and taken to custody, or when they present at A&E with a violence related injury. By adopting a highly responsive and flexible approach, the service is able to intervene at moments of crisis to prevent further harm and help turn around the lives of vulnerable young people at risk of criminal exploitation.

Music To My Ears Project (Surrey)

Music to My Ears is a creative arts project in Surrey that supports children and young people at risk of – or involved in – CCE. This unique and innovative service supports young people to build resilience through making music, films, photography – even lego building! This allows young people to talk about their experiences and feelings in an innovative way, as well as engaging them in a positive hobby.

The music used in the video above was made by a Young Person that was supported through the project!

LINKS CarePath

These three services implemented the LINKS CarePath system in April this year, with a view to helping workers manage their caseloads, share data and meet their reporting requirements.
